Carrickfergus in Bloom – Britain in Bloom
a

Blooming Marvellous
One of the many reasons why we feel justifiably proud of Carrickfergus is its abundance of flowers and attractive horticultural displays. Carrickfergus Borough Council developed the ‘Carrickfergus in Bloom’ initiative to brighten up the Borough, and as a result, each summer it is enlivened by hundreds of hanging baskets, bedding displays, shrub beds and trees that help make the town a brighter place for its citizens and visitors.

‘Carrickfergus in Bloom’ is part of the Translink ‘Ulster in Bloom’ competition.  This is a province-wide campaign organised by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and its aim is to promote tourism by encouraging local people to make their cities, towns and villages as attractive as possible by the imaginative and decorative use of flowers. We have won Ulster in Bloom six times

Everyone can play a role in the enhancement of Carrickfergus and the improvement of the town as a place to live, work and visit.

Britain in Bloom
For over 40 years, Britain in Bloom has been organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.  It is now the largest horticultural competition in Europe and entry is by invitation only. The judging criteria of the awards cover not only the aesthetic appeal of the planting and floral displays, but also embrace environmental issues and community involvement and other core elements such as cleanliness and issues of litter, graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour. We have been runner-up in Britain in Bloom five times.

In 2005, the town of Whitehead, some six miles north of Carrickfergus, scooped a silver award at the RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals and the town will again represent Northern Ireland at Britain in Bloom in 2006.
