Carrickfergus in Bloom Community Competitions
The Carrickfergus in Bloom Community Competitions, organised by Carrickfergus Borough Council, provide opportunities for everyone living and working in the Borough to make their garden or business more attractive with beautiful displays of flowers and plants. By actively supporting this competition you will not only help to create a more pleasing environment for residents and visitors, but you will also assist Carrickfergus’s entry to the Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition and the Britain in Bloom Competition.
The categories are:
- Best Kept Garden
- Best Kept Container Garden
- Best Kept Community Planting Scheme
- Best Kept Commercial Premises
- Best Kept Floral Display by Traders in a Street or Centre.
The Children’s categories include:
- Painting
- Poetry
- Tallest Sunflower Competition
- Largest Pumpkin Competiton

Rules of Competition
1. Entries are open to persons living within Carrickfergus Borough only. Employees or their families of organisations associated with this show cannot enter the competition.
2. Entries are restricted to one entry per household per section / class.
3. Entries may be used by Carrickfergus Borough Council for promotional purposes.
4. Carrickfergus Borough Council reserves the right to refuse any entry.
5. No household can win more that two prizes within the competition.
6. Last years first prize category winners are unable to enter the category they won, runners-up may do so.
7. The organisation and judging of this event is controlled by Carrickfergus Borough Council and the decision of the Chairman of the Brighter Borough Sub Committee is final in every situation including any not covered above and no correspondence will be entered into.

Carrickfergus in Bloom Virtual Gardener
We don’t all have green fingers but anyone can be a virtual gardener. Enter the Virtual Gardener Competition by submitting a favourite photograph before 21st August 2006 that fits one of the six classes below:
- My Garden
- My Favourite Outdoor Plant
- My Favourite Indoor Plant
- My Favourite Landscape or Garden Setting
- Flowers in their natural, wild setting
- Flowers with pets or other animals

Prizes
The Virtual Flower Show has a total prize fund of £450 in gift tokens:
- the first prize in each category is a £50 gift token
- there is a £25 gift token for runners up.
Winners and runners up will also receive a certificate and will be invited to an award ceremony in October at Carrickfergus Civic Centre. The judges will also issue a ‘highly commended’ award; prizes include Carrickfergus in Bloom umbrellas, key rings and pens.
Rules for Exhibiting
1. Entries are open to persons living within Carrickfergus Borough only. Others may submit their photos for viewing but cannot enter the competition. Employees or their families of organisations associated with this show cannot enter the competition.
2. Entries may be submitted in jpeg format or alternatively send your photo (with entry form) by post to Virtual Flower Show, Carrickfergus in Bloom, Museum & Civic Centre, Carrickfergus, BT38 7DG. Photos will be displayed at 220 pixels wide.
3. Photographs must be taken by the entrant although not necessarily of blooms grown by the entrant.
4. Entries must be submitted with a title.
5. Entries are restricted to one photograph per household per class.
6. Entries may be used by Carrickfergus Borough Council for promotional purposes.
7. Carrickfergus Borough Council reserves the right to refuse any entry.

Other Competitions
Historic Walled Towns Photographic Competition
To celebrate the Carrickfergus’s participation in Irish Walled Towns Day (27th August 2006), the Borough Council, in conjunction with The Heritage Council of Ireland, is pleased to announce:
‘The Historic Walled Towns Photographic Competition’
To take part, simply submit a photograph/s which you think best illustrates this theme:
“Historic defensive walls have left unique and visible impressions on our Irish towns and cities”
The objective of the competition is to select a photograph which best captures this impression of our Walled Town.
Entries will be divided into two categories:
- Adults (18 and over); and,
- Children (under 18).

A prize will be awarded to the winner of the adult category and for the children’s winner.
All entries must be in printed format. Carrickfergus Borough Council and The Heritage Council reserve the right to reproduce and exhibit without fee any image in connection with the event with due acknowledgement to the author.
Irish Walled Towns and Cities National Photographic Competition 2006
The winners of the Walled Towns Competition will be entered into “The Irish Walled Town and Cities National Photographic Competition” organised by The Irish Walled Towns Network in conjunction with The Heritage Council of Ireland.
The categories for the National Competition will be the same as the local competition. The winners of the National Competition will be announced at the Irish Walled Towns Network Annual Dinner on the 9th November 2006.
A Dell Laptop computer will be awarded to the overall National Winners.

Historic Walled Town Photographic Competition Rules
1. Entries for the competition will close at 5pm on Friday 29th September 2006. Winners will be notified after Friday 27th October.
2. Entries can be black or white or colour.
a. Prints should be a minimum of 6 x 4 inches, maximum 10 x 8 inches;
b. Prints should have the entrant’s name and address written on the back of each print.
c. Digital images must be submitted in print format.
3. Judges appointed by Carrickfergus Borough Council will choose the winners. The judges’s decisions will be final.
4. Images must feature Carrickfergus Town Walls.
5. Up to 5 images may be entered by each entrant.
6. Competition age groups are as follows: Adult (over 18) and Child (under 18).
7. All work must be original in concept and the copyright of such work must be at the disposal of the entrant.
8. Carrickfergus Borough Council reserves the right to reproduce and exhibit without fee any image in connection with the event with due acknowledgement to the author.
9. All images are sent at the entrant’s risk and Carrickfergus Borough Council regrets that it cannot take any liability for any loss of, or damage accruing to any images entered in the competition (how so ever caused), nor for any loss damage resulting there from.
10. If you wish to have your work returned please enclose a stamped address envelope. Carrickfergus Borough Council will return work as soon as possible after the closing date of the competition.
11. Entry to the competition confirms acceptance of these rules.
12. Prizes will be awarded to one winner in each category.
13. Carrickfergus Borough Council reserves the right to enter any images into The Irish Walled Town and Cities National Photographic Competition.
The Walled Towns Friendship Circle (WTFC) is the International Association for the sustainable development of walled towns, walled cities and fortified historic towns.
Membership of the WTFC currently includes 152 historic walled towns and cities in Europe and beyond. WTFC was founded in 1989 in Tenby in South Wales and has received funding through the European Commission.
